Considered, More Than Just Green
Nike's Considered Products are good for the planet
Nike has been working to integrate sustainable design into its numerous product lines for several years. From the newest release of its AIR JORDAN XX3 shoe, to the ACG outdoor gear, Nike’s Considered ethos embraces both footwear and apparel. It is the driving force behind Nike’s commitment to integrate sustainable product innovation across all Nike branded product.
All Considered products start with the concept of enhancing environmental sustainability and blend in performance attributes and progressive aesthetics. Considered footwear employs snap-fit technology to minimize adhesives and applies a liberal use of raw materials that are recycled or sustainable. Apparel too includes Eco-conscious materials and detailing, while unique design practices maximize the fabric cut from a material block to minimize waste in production.
Nike Apparel
Nike has moved toward designing apparel that features trims made with Nike Grind material from the manufacturing scrap of Nike Air bags. To formulate the Nike Grind for their use, ACG worked with Nike’s in-house manufacturing team, which produces Nike Air bags, to test TPU scrap material for the properties needed in apparel trims. After extensive research and testing, ACG was able to develop a range of apparel trims and accessories – including zipper pulls, snaps and buttons – using 50-100% TPU scrap material.

Nike Footwear
One iconic example of Nike Considered entering the footwear line is the Nike Considered Boot which earned Gold Industrial Design Excellence and Best in Show awards from the IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) in 2005. It was the concept shoe of Nike’s Spring 2005 collection that launched Considered product— essentially a prototype that drove us to reconsider both design and environmental impact to end up with a shoe that looked utterly different from anything we had ever created.
The Nike Considered Boot is a performance shoe that combines subtle styling with unique environmental benefits without sacrificing Nike's commitment to design innovation. The handcrafted boot sports a unique look obtained by weaving hemp lace between the leather upper to produce a one-of-a-kind shoe that molds to the foot. The project grew out of consumer feedback that clearly indicated a desire for more sustainable products. The designers achieved impressive environmental statistics: a reduction of 61 percent in manufacturing waste, 35 percent in energy consumption and 89 percent in the use of solvents. In addition, the shoe is designed to be more effectively recycled in Nike's ReUse-A-Shoe program.
