CONSIDERED APPAREL FOR THE WORLD'S TOP ATHLETES
NIKE CREATES PINNACLE PRODUCTS FOR BEIJING
Nike has always been about performance innovation for the benefit of the athlete, and no more so than at the world’s biggest sporting event on the world’s biggest stage - the Olympics.
However, for the past decade Nike has also been challenging itself to innovate for both the athlete and the environment.
We call this our Considered ethos – a commitment to design sustainable products that solve environmental challenges without sacrificing performance.
This means creating products that use:
- Less toxics
- Less waste
- More environmentally-friendly materials, and;
- Sustainable product innovation
We have set ourselves aggressive public targets – all Nike footwear will meet Considered baseline standards by 2011. All apparel by 2015, and all equipment by 2020.
For the 2008 Olympics Nike will showcase three Considered products; Swift Track and Field and Rowing apparel and the PreCool Vest.
Swift
This is the first time that the entire range of Nike Swift Track and Field and Rowing apparel will be Considered.
The 2008 Swift product is the fastest Nike has produced and we believe we’ve made a breakthrough by using 100% recycled polyester in pinnacle performance apparel without sacrificing an ounce of performance.
Given that the slightest change in fabrication or construction can alter the aerodynamic performance of a Swift Suit, producing an entire sustainable range of Nike’s fastest-ever performance apparel is a significant achievement.
In Track and Field Nike will have 26 Swift Considered products across 442 styles and in Rowing there will be 10 styles. That represents 24 percent of Nike’s entire apparel range for the Olympics.
By using recycled polyester Nike has also diverted 9,400kg, or 20,700lbs, of polyester waste from landfill.
PreCool Vest
Nike’s PreCool Vest has three key Considered elements:
- The material used to house the triangular ice cells is composed of 45 percent Nike Grind (waste from the production of Nike air bags)
- No glues or chemicals were used in the construction of the PreCool Vest. The Vest is welded or stitched together.
- The insulated carry bag is made from 50 percent scrap wool felt and 50 percent polyester used to produce men’s business suits.
Rejuven8 Medal Stand Shoe
Nike’s Considered Medal Stand shoe has an injected molded upper and sole. This manufacturing process produces much less waste than a tradition shoe because there is no left-over material.
By creating an engineered footwear structure that doesn’t need additional support or added foams, the material and energy used in the shoe’s overall construction was minimized.
The left and right uppers are a mirror-image, further reducing energy use by only needing one set of tooling and halving the number of molds required.
The outsole is made using Nike’s environmentally-friendly green rubber formula, reducing the use of harmful chemicals used in traditional formulas by 97 percent.
Consumers will be able to purchase the Considered Rejuven8 shoe during the Olympics.
