NIKE'S ONLINE AUCTION FOR CHINA RELIEF
NIKE AND DESIGNER HIROSHI FUJIWARA CREATE PANDA SHOE
In response to the devastating earthquake that shook China’s Sichuan Province and surrounding areas in early May, Nike and influential footwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara partnered to create the Nike Zoom Tennis Classic “Panda Shoe” auction. Designed by Fujiwara, the limited edition tennis shoes (550 each in black and white) were bid on this past June during a two week online auction for Japanese consumers.
Inspired by the Giant Panda found in China’s Sichuan Province, among others, Fujiwara’s “Panda Shoe” raised over USD$178,000 for China relief. As a close partner, Nike was able to donate all of the money raised toward Mercy Corps’ relief efforts, including a program called "Youth in Emergencies" that uses sport to help youth recover from the trauma of natural disasters.
“It was great to work with Hiroshi on this generous donation,” said Takashi Takezawa, Nike Japan’s Communications Manager. “We were thrilled by the energy and support that was generated by the auction.”
Nike will continue to seek out innovative ways to help in the China relief efforts. In the meantime, if you would like to donate money to the relief effort please click through to our partner’s websites for further information.
