The Homeless World Cup exists to be a catalyst for lasting change through the development of street soccer programs around the world in a way that creates maximum social impact for the players involved – the socially excluded, homeless people and those living in poverty.
And it works. An estimated 77 percent of players involved in the Homeless World Cup program report that they significantly change their lives as a result.
Nike is a founding sponsor of the Homeless World Cup, which drew 500 players from 48 nations for the 2007 finals in Copenhagen, Denmark. It’s a perfect fit with Nike’s Let Me Play initiative and the mission of unleashing human potential through sport.
By donating cash and product, as well as marketing, design and communications support and more, Nike has been a key supporter of the program since its inception. The 6th Homeless World Cup event is scheduled for December, 2008 in Melbourne, Australia.
Keep an eye out for “Kicking It” a full-length documentary recently featured at the Sundance Film Festival, narrated by Colin Farrell, who was also the film’s executive producer.
