CHILDREN GET SHOES, EQUIPMENT AT NIKE'S WHQ

NIKE REACTS TO "OPRAH'S BIG GIVE" WITH ITS OWN

Around 350 local kids and volunteers scored Nike shoes, soccer equipment, basketballs and footballs as part of “Oprah’s Big Give.” Friends of the Children were the beneficiaries of the prominent television host’s campaign to change lives. Friends of the Children is a non-profit organization, with roots in Oregon, that pairs at-risk kids with long-term mentors.

After Oprah named local ABC station KATU as one of 100 affiliates to receive $10,000 to seed its fund-raising efforts, the television station set a goal of turning the donation into $100,000 for its charity, Friends of the Children. Nike partnered with KATU and contributed more than $60,000 in product and cash to help reach the goal. Kids came to Nike’s World Headquarters near Beaverton for a special event where the donations were handed out.

“Organizations like Friends of the Children are very important to the community and we are honored to be able to help them and the kids they serve through our Let Me Play program,” said Craig Cheek, Vice President and General Manager of Nike’s USA Region.

Nike’s donation is a contribution made under its greater Let Me Play commitment, which focuses on providing access to sports for young people worldwide.
