NIKE DISPLAYS SUSTAINABLE, COST-EFFECTIVE WALLS

TAKING THE CONSIDERED APPROACH TO DISPLAYS

Nike understands that the lifespan of its displays and the materials used to create them is often limited. So, following the guidelines of Nike’s Considered philosophy, Nike’s Meeting and Events department has come up with an innovative solution to how we use displays.

In January 2007, Nike Meeting and Events Production Coordinator Donny Burklow developed what he calls “Eye Candy Walls,” a sustainable and cost-efficient way to display Nike product. Rather than spending thousands of dollars printing graphics onto nonrenewable Foam Core Board, he created an innovative method of presentation: projection.

The “Eye Candy Walls,” built by Hunter Holmes, are constructed using the same foam core board but utilize projectors to display content and maintain the functionality and lifespan of the boards. Nike has been using the same eight 4x8-foot boards for more than a year, changing the graphics with just the click of a mouse. Products are presented electronically using a projected image as visually inspiring as printed graphics.

Nike saved $6,000 alone at the Manchester United Premiere Cup last May, and Burklow estimates yearly savings of more than $100,000.

“The client didn’t want to print any more graphics, and they were tired of the waste, so this was a good and sustainable solution,” said Burklow. “In this way they could just change up their graphics during the same meeting.”

Burklow expects each of the boards to last a couple years.
